Metamorphosis of Masculinity (2022) is a site-specific performance art piece staged in London. It serves as a visceral investigation into the fluid boundaries of gender identity, specifically questioning the rigid archetypes of traditional masculinity. Through movement and bodily presence, the work explores the tension between the inherited "social armor" of manhood and the internal drive toward a more liminal, unclassified state of being.
In this work, Mingxiang Wang utilizes the body as a primary medium—a vessel that both contains and resists societal expectations. The performance documents a ritualistic transformation, where the physical form navigates through states of vulnerability and strength. By deconstructing the visual and gestural cues of "masculine" performance, the piece invites the audience to reconsider the body not as a fixed entity, but as a site of constant metamorphosis and potential.

Featuring experimental silhouettes (in collaboration with HARRI), the performance bridges the gap between contemporary art and radical fashion, creating a "grainy," intimate atmosphere that challenges the spectator’s gaze. It marks a significant moment in Wang’s practice where the personal narrative of gender exploration meets the public space of collective critique.
