[About]
What a Small World is a narrative short film funded by the Sound Department of the Beijing Film Academy (50,000 RMB). Produced as a formal response to the rigorous standards of commercial genre cinema, the film demonstrates a sophisticated command of synchronous sound, structured storytelling, and the classical "hero's journey" framework.
[Synopsis] The story follows a mischievous boy from a single-parent household who constructs an elaborate digital ruse to complete a school assignment titled "My Home." By fabricating a female online persona to engage a "naïve" man in a romantic interaction, the boy navigates a complex web of deception until his mother, a restaurant hostess, uncovers the charade.
[Artistic Evolution] While adhering to traditional cinematic conventions, the film introduces pivotal themes that define Mingxiang Wang’s later interdisciplinary practice: the performance of gender between digital and physical realms, the tension between the public social self and private life, and the translation of semi-autobiographical experiences into broader social reflections.
