[About]
Blue Dream is a semi-autobiographic video work that combined Mingxiang Wang's photography archive since 2012. Ten years later, in December 2022, I was invited by METRO Charity to screen the work at the opening of the UK AIDS Memorial Quilt display at Fireworks Factory, Woolwich Works. The Quilt is a monumental piece of folk art — each panel stitched by someone who loved someone who is no longer here.
The screening took place for World AIDS Day. My intention was simple: to bring the vulnerability of analogue film — its warmth, its imperfection, its refusal to be sharp — into a space dedicated to remembrance. The work speaks to a new generation about the ongoing reality of HIV/AIDS stigma, not through information, but through presence. By being there. By showing up with something personal and saying: this matters, still.
The event brought together local community members and public officials, and for me it was one of those moments where art does exactly what it should — holds open a space that might otherwise close.
